Twenty-one athletes from the San Bernardino Valley College track and field took another step toward the state championships with their performances at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championships held at Cuyamaca College.
Five athletes took home conference championships in six events, with 12 of the 21 qualifying for the Southern California Regionals in more than one event. The Southern California Regional Preliminaries are scheduled for May 2 at Bakersfield College.
Tamia Hardwick will be headed to regionals in three events, having won two at the PCAC Finals. In the long jump, she posted her personal best with a jump of 19 feet, 4 inches – the fourth longest jump in school history – to take the top spot. In the triple jump, she won the title with a jump of 37 feet, 3.25 inches. In the high jump, she cleared 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch) for third place.
Distance runners Savannah Flores and Callie Frias will be headed to Bakersfield to compete in two events. Flores won the 10,000 meters, posting a personal best of 40 minutes, 44.71 seconds – eclipsing the school record by more than 2 minutes. She finished second in the 5,000 meters, posting a time of 19:19.74. Frias won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 12:59.25, and she finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:38.66.
Joining those three in Bakersfield will be:
- Makayla Traylor, who finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.03 seconds.
- Zyani Perez, who posted a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:36.24.
- Mia Gonzalez, who advanced in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles.
- Liliana Wilson, who finished with a personal best in the 400 meters, stopping the clock at 1:04.34.
