Michael Cordero
Dean of Kinesiology, Health and Athletics
San Bernardino Valley College
Michael Cordero joins San Bernardino Valley College as a dedicated educator with extensive experience in instruction, collegiate athletics, and program development. At Coalinga College, he served as a Kinesiology and Health Instructor, Head Baseball Coach, and department lead, where he worked to better align academic and athletic programs to support student needs. In that role, Cordero led efforts to strengthen curriculum and expand opportunities for students in the kinesiology program. He developed the Associate of Arts for Transfer (AAT) in Kinesiology, introduced new course offerings, and conducted program review and resource allocation for facilities improvements. He also contributed to the growth of athletics on campus, including helping develop a new women’s basketball program, with a focus on meeting both student demand and Title IX compliance.
Cordero’s teaching experience includes Chaffey College, Cypress College, and Loyola High School, where he has taught a range of kinesiology, physical education, and health courses. His approach emphasizes student engagement, applied learning, and personal development, with a consistent focus on building confidence, accountability, and long-term success.
He also brings an accomplished coaching background, having served as head coach at Chaffey College and as an assistant coach at Cypress College, Pasadena City College, Santa Barbara City College, and Charleston Southern University. At the high school level, he built nationally ranked programs at Agoura High School and Loyola High School. Over the course of his career, more than 170 student-athletes have advanced to four-year universities, 22 have competed in the College World Series, producing six national champions and one Major League Baseball World Series champion. Two of his former players are currently in Major League Baseball, with others competing in Minor League and independent professional systems.
At San Bernardino Valley College, Cordero aims to increase the visibility of the kinesiology program, strengthen career pathways, and help expand the presence of athletics in the community. He is committed to fostering a collaborative, student-centered environment that supports inclusion, access, and engagement, elevating the impact of kinesiology, health, and athletics across campus.
Cordero is a junior college product of Pasadena City College and later went on to earn a Master of Science in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from Upper Iowa University. Before education and coaching, he gained experience in marketing and public relations, focusing on Hispanic markets for brands including Got Milk?, Nike, and other national companies. His transition into administration reflects his leadership experience and dedication to advancing programs that positively impact students and the broader campus community.
