Twenty-one athletes from the San Bernardino Valley College track and field took another step toward the state championships with their performances at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championships held at Cuyamaca College.

Five athletes took home conference championships in six events, with 12 of the 21 qualifying for the Southern California Regionals in more than one event. The Southern California Regional Preliminaries are scheduled for May 2 at Bakersfield College.

One of the runners to watch on the men's side will be sophomore Zach Calderon, who is looking to return to the state championships in the 10,000 meters. He won the 10K at the PCAC Championships with a time 32 minutes, 57.80 seconds. He also finished second in the 5,000 meters, posting a time of 15:31.13.

Fellow distance runner Micah Watson will also be pulling double duty at the regionals. He finished third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:38.98. He is also entered in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at regionals, having skipped the event at the PCAC Finals. Watson posted a state qualifying time earlier in the season and has the second-fastest time in Southern California in the event this season.

Watson will have plenty of company in the steeplechase, as four more members of the SBVC team qualified for the event. Diego Caldera finished second at the PCAC meet, with a time 10:17.39. In third was Noah Townsend at 10:21.03, and he was followed by Samuel Chavarria (who has the seventh-fastest time in the event this season) with a time of 10:29.52. Finishing fifth was Adam Acuna, who finished with a personal best time of 10:35.75.

Jordan Carter will be headed to Bakersfield with a gold medal and to participate in three events. He won the triple jump competition with a jump of 46 feet, 1.5 inches – a personal best. He is also part of SBVC's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that will go to Bakersfield.

Others headed to Bakersfield include:

  • Elijah McBroom, who finished with a personal best time of 34:09.17 in the 10,000 meters.
  • Sean Salcedo, who also posted a PR in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:47.29.
  • Oscar Hernandez, who finished fifth in the 800 meters at 1:58.74, and will be part of the 4x400 relay team.
