Men's Team Shows Success in Split Sessions

Members of the San Bernardino Valley College track and field teams split up last weekend, testing themselves against teams from across the state and from various levels depending on discipline.

Athletes from the distance crew traveled to San Francisco to participate in the Mike Fanelli Classic at San Francisco State.

Micah Watson continued his run near the top of the state in the 3000-meter steeplechase, winning his heat with a personal best time of 9 minutes, 20.44 seconds – clocking in 15 seconds faster than his season best and 9 seconds faster than his personal best. His time is also the second-fastest in the 3C2A this year.

Zach Calderon continued pushing to return to the state championships in the 10,000 meters, after finishing eighth last year. Saturday, he ran a personal best time of 32:11.96.

Oscar Hernandez ran in two events in San Francisco. Friday, he took 11th place in the 1500 meters, running close to his personal best at 4:06.88. Then, on Saturday, he ran a lifetime best in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.70.

The rest of the team participated at the Moorpark Invitational on Friday.

Noah Townsend won the 3000-meter steeplechase at the event, crossing the line at 10:20.53.

Luis Muniz took second in the 400 meters, with a time of 49.67 seconds, then finished second in his heat of the 200 meters with a personal best time of 22.07 seconds.

The men's 4x100 meter relay team - consisting of Muniz, Xavier Wilson, Sebastian Tabares, and Jordan Carter – finished second in its heat, posting a time of 43.73 seconds.

The team regathers for the Cerritos Invitational on Friday, before heading to the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference prelims on April 15.
