The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team used a seven-run seventh inning to break open a tight game, as the Wolverines defeated College of the Desert 16-7 to close out the regular season on April 23.
SBVC was up 6-3 to start the frame, then sent 11 men to the plate in the inning. They pounded out six hits - five of them doubles - to plate the seven runs in the inning. The inning opened with back-to-back-to-back doubles, as Sky Donaldson hit one that ended up under the fence in left. He scored on Ryder DeJournett's double to center. Then pinch-hitter Cainon Wrisley hit a 1-2 pitch down the left-field line to score DeJournett. Donaldson finished the scoring in the inning with his second double of the frame, driving home Gama Martinez for the seventh run.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Tyler Crawford and the SBVC defense was keeping the Desert offense under control. Crawford gave up three runs on three hits through seven innings of work. He picked off a runner at first, and the Wolverines turned three double plays behind him to keep the Roadrunners at bay.
In all, the Wolverines pounded out 17 hits in the game, with seven of them doubles. Donaldson ended the game 3-for-6 with the two doubles and three runs batted in. Jeremiah Acosta finished with three RBI as well, and Cristian Leos finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Wrisley was 2-for-2 off the bench with two runs scored and an RBI.
SBVC finished the regular season with a record of 20-20, its best record since the 2016 season, when the team finished 19-16-1.
