The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team found itself down two runs after the top of the first Saturday.
It didn't take them long to make it up - and much more.
SBVC scored five times in the bottom half of the first, then tacked on two more runs in the second as the Wolverines went on to cruise to a 14-3 victory over Barstow College on April 18.
Jeremiah Acosta led off the inning with a single. Adrian Diaz followed with a single of his own to left. But the ball skipped under the glove of left fielder Jaxsen Francisco and rolled to the fence, allowing Acosta to come around and score, with Diaz stopping at second. Gama Martinez was hit by a pitch, and Ryder DeJournett followed with a single to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed all three runners to move up 90 feet, tying the game, and Cristian Leos completed his at bat by drawing a walk. Miguel Soto hit a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.
SBVC picked up another unearned run to start the rally in the second. Diaz led off drawing a walk. Martinez hit a grounder to shortstop, but a throw to force out Diaz ended up in right field, allowing Diaz to advane to third. Martinez went to second on a wild pitch, then Diaz scored on a bloop single to center from DeJournett.
The Wolverines tacked on five more runs in the sixth, the big blow coming off the bat of Diaz, who launched a ball over the line on the left field fence for a two-run shot.
Meanwhile, a series of eight SBVC pitchers shut down the Vikings at the plate. After giving up the two runs in the first, Tyler Crawford retired the side in order in the second before giving way to a series of relievers, who each pitched one inning. In all, the combined SBVC pitching staff gave up six hits and struck out eight on the day.
The top three in the SBVC batting order did a large amount of the damage in the game. Leadoff batter Acosta was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a run batted in. No. 2 hitter Diaz finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate, with three runs scored and three RBIs. And Martinez finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
SBVC concludes its regular season this week with home games Tuesday vs. Chaffey and Thurday against College of the Desert. Both games begin at 2 p.m.
