SBVC Women Race To Front in Season Opener

The San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team got its season off to a strong start by taking the top spot at the Cuyamaca Cross Country Kick-Off race at Harry Griffen Park in La Mesa.

SBVC placed three runners in the top eight, and its scoring five finished in the top 13 to allow the team to finish in first place with 36 points. There were only 59 seconds separating the Wolverines' scoring group.

Priscilla De Leon and Callie Frias were the first two to stop the clock, finishing with a second of one another in fourth and fifth, respectively. De Leon finished the 2.1-mile course just ahead of Frias at 14 minutes, 20 seconds.

The next Wolverine across the line was Zyani Perez, who finished eighth with a time of 14:57. Hazel Torres (11th, 15:13) and Liliana Wilson (13th, 15:19) closed out the scoring five. Alondra Mayorga finished 17th with a time of 15:41 and Ashley Reyna crossed at 16:01 for 22nd.

SBVC will face a bigger challenge this weekend, as it heads to the site of the state championships, Woodward Park in Fresno, for the Clovis Crush Invitational.
